DirectX 9.0c (Full Package)
DirectX 9.0c will help improve multimedia experiences on most PCs. This latest version of DirectX offers improved security, updated graphics, faster frame rates, and support for massively multiplayer games. It also features more immersive audio when running and displaying programs rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3-D animation and surround sound. If you had an earlier version of DirectX installed on your system, you will see little difference in available space on your hard drive following the installation. DirectX 9.0c will overwrite any earlier versions. This release also resolves a number of minor bugs and included security updates.
Important notes: This is the ‘redist’ version – all files are downloaded in one package (rather than an active download). DirectX is a crucial system component. It cannot be uninstalled without reinstalling your operating system (!). Released April 2007.

Microsoft .NET Framework runtime files 3.0
Applies to:
Windows Vista/XP
Requirements
Windows Vista/XP
File Name
dotnetfx3.exe
File Size
50MB
Description
The .NET Framework 3.0 runtime file package includes everything you need to run applications developed using Microsoft’s .NET Framework programming tools (eg Visual Studio 2005). What does this mean for the average user of a computer? If a software author uses .NET Framework to write programs, then you will need this runtime package in order to install and use the software. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to know whether a program needs these files because often an author fails to mention it in the help files or documentation. Typically the way you find out is that you run the program and an error message appears ‘This program requires .NET Framework’, ‘Runtime error’ (caution, this error has lots of different causes) or ’1645 Error Installing Microsoft .NET Framework, Return Code [followed by four numbers].’ You may even get the wonderfully frustrating ‘Setup Failure – unknown reason.’With a little luck, this latest version of the .NET Framework version 3.0 runtime files should get you up and running. Microsoft advise that anyone with an earlier version (eg 1.0 or 1.0 SP2) should also upgrade. Also, some bad news – Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 will not run on Windows 2000.

Windows Vista Critical Security Update for April 2007 (KB925902)
Applies to:
Windows Vista
Requirements
Windows Vista
File Name
Windows6.0-KB925902-x86.msu
File Size
1.4MB
Description
For April 2007, Microsoft released this patch a week early because it was deemed critical. It fixes many issues affecting the Windows GDI (Graphics Device Interface) whose main function is to handle the display of graphics on monitors and printers. This includes drawing lines, curves, fonts, colors and so on. This is a critical system component and leaving it unpatched will make it easy for a virus or hacker to attack your system.
One of the vulnerabilities lies in .ani files – which is a significant concern. Theses files are used to animate the cursor icon (such as the hour glass when Windows is busy). There are reports that the hole was already being exploited by hackers before the patch came out. The main culprits installed on unpatched PCs are key-stroke loggers. These pests record the strokes on your keyboard – such as bank account details or passwords and send them to hackers.
Note: The patch above is only for the Windows Vista operating system. Optional updates, critical releases for Internet Explorer, Office, DirectX or other Microsoft products are not included. Patches for these programs must be downloaded separately.

CSRSS stands for client/server run-time subsystem and is an essential subsystem that must be running at all times. CSRSS is responsible for console windows, creating and/or deleting threads.’ We’re glad that’s clear. Regardless of how much you understand about the update of the holes it patches, this security ownload is rated by Microsoft as Critical, so get it now.

Movie Maker 2.6 for Windows Vista
Applies to:
Windows Vista with a version of Movie Maker installed
Requirements
Windows Vista with a version of Movie Maker installed
File Name
MM26_ENU.msi
File Size
7MB
Description
Movie Maker is the Windows video editing software that is normally installed with Vista. Unfortunately, the version that shipped with Windows Vista (labelled as version 6, but in reality should be called version 3), has a few problems that stop some users from running the software. Here is what Microsoft have to say:’Movie Maker 2.6 is for Windows Vista users whose computer cannot run the Vista version of Movie Maker. If you get an error message that says, ‘Windows Movie Maker cannot start because your video card does not support the required level of hardware acceleration or hardware acceleration is not available’, download and install Movie Maker 2.6. Movie Maker 2.6 requires a version of Microsoft Windows Vista that has the Vista version of Movie Maker already installed.’
Microsoft do not release Movie Maker as a standalone installation, so even though the Vista edition (version 6) may not work on your system, you must have it on your system before downloading this file. This installation will then downgrade Movie Maker from version 6 to 2.6. Not surprisingly, some usrs are quite annoyed that they have bought and installed an upgraded version of Windows, only to find they need to downgrade a component because it doesn’t work properly. If you use Windows XP, version 2.1 of Movie Maker is included in Service Pack 2.

Windows Vista iPod ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ patch
Applies to:
Windows Vista (32 bit) and an iPod
Requirements
Windows Vista (32 bit)
File Name
Windows6.0-KB933824-x86.msu
File Size
0.2MB
Description
This one is so ironic, it took the combined genius of both Apple and Microsoft to come up with it. Ejecting an iPod from Windows Explorer or the Windows notification area (system tray) using the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ feature may corrupt your iPod. In other words, the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ is supposed to be the safest and most reliable way to disconnect hardware, yet in this case it can corrupt the contents of your iPod – the exact thing it designed to avoid doing. This patch fixes the problem so you can now use the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ feature in Vista. It was a surprise that this patch came from Microsoft and not Apple.
This suggests the problem lies in the Vista Operating System and not within iTunes or the iPods. Perhaps Microsoft didn’t trust Apple to fix the problem.
If your iPod did become corrupt because of this error, selecting your iPod in iTunes and clicking Restore in the iPod’s Summary panel should return your iPod to a working condition.

Windows Help softwre for opening .hlp files on Vista
Applies to:
Windows Vista (32 bit)
Requirements
Windows Vista (32 bit)
File Name
Windows6.0-KB917607-x86.msu
File Size
0.6MB
Description
A long time ago, Microsoft commonly used the .hlp extension (eg win16.hlp) as a way of identifying and loading help files in Windows. This was not just for Windows help files – but all sorts of software and drivers used .hlp files. Over the years, it was slowly phased out and in Vista you can’t even open .hlp files. That’s why you need this program. WinHlp32.exe will allow you to view .hlp files on Windows Vista (32 bit). The thing about help files is that you don’t normally care about them until you really need them. So get the program now to ensure that you can view any important help file when the time arises.
A quick search on a test machine loaded with software showed that over fifty .hlp files were on the system. This number will vary, and is likely to be smaller on some installation of Windows Vista due to the poor compatibility of Windows Vista and older software. However this is a small download and worth the time.
Apart from releasing WinHlp32.exe months after Vista, Microsoft has almost disowned this type of file. Here is what they have to say ‘The Windows Help program has not had a major update for many releases and no longer meets Microsoft’s standards. Therefore, starting with the release of Windows Vista, the Windows Help program will not ship as a feature of Windows.

Description
This update for Internet Explorer 7 on Windows Vista fixes a bug where Internet Explorer 7 becomes very slow or stops. This slow behaviour of Internet Explorer 7 is due to the way the Phishing Filter evaluates the content of Web pages – especially when the Web page contains many frames or you browse many frames quickly. A frame is used on some sites to help with navigation – the use of frames is up to the Web site designer. If you are still not sure about the function of frames, don’t worry about it. Just get this update for Internet Explorer 7 to fix the problem before your browser starts acting like it is powered by a hamster.

Description
This update for Windows Vista fixes one type of STOP 0x0000000A – IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error. These errors are frightfully common in Vista and XP. This patch will fix the error when all the following are present: the computer uses more than 3 GB of RAM, plus a storage system is running the Storport miniport driver and the computer uses a controller that uses 32-bit direct memory access (which could be anything).
Under these circumstances trying to install Vista will cause it to spit the dummy and give you the following: STOP 0x0000000A (somenumber, somenumber, somenumber, somenumber)
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

Windows Vista patch to fix USB errors
Applies to:
Windows Vista (32 bit)
Requirements
Windows Vista (32 bit)
File Name
Windows6.0-KB925528-x86.msu
File Size
0.4MB
Description
This USB update for Windows Vista fixes a wide range of problems affecting USB devices. According to Microsoft, here are the types of errors that the update will fix:
A device stops responding (hangs) or stops working correctly. There may be a yellow exclamation mark next to the device in Device Manager. Or, the device may not appear in Device Manager. The device may be a fingerprint reader, a Windows Media Center remote control, an optical drive, a FeliCa reader, or some other device.
After you resume the computer, you use the Safely Remove Hardware option to remove a device on a portable Windows Vista-based computer. However, in this situation, you cannot reconnect the device. After this issue occurs, the computer may stop responding when you try to shut it down or to perform a restart. A device such as a fingerprint reader is not available for use at the Welcome screen.
The LED lights that represent NUM LOCK, CAPS LOCK, and SCROLL LOCK functionality on a universal serial bus (USB) keyboard do not assume their pre-sleep or pre-hibernation status after the computer resumes.
Additionally, these lights now remain off, regardless of the status of the corresponding keys. You receive an error message that states that a device does not meet the Logo requirements. This update also addresses two issues in which you may receive a Stop error message that resembles one of the following
STOP 127 PAGE_NOT_ZERO_NVIDIA_USB
This error occurs on a Windows Vista-based computer that uses 2 gigabytes (GB) or more of RAM and an nVidia nForce EHCI controller.
STOP 0x1000007E usbhub.sys SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Windows XP to Vista Restore utility
Applies to:
Windows Vista (32 bit)
Requirements
Windows Vista (32 bit)
File Name
NtBackupRestore_x86.msi
File Size
1MB
Description
This free program from Microsoft lets you restore a backup made on Windows XP onto Windows Vista. The first question you are probably asking is why do you need this program. Well, it seems the Backup or Restore Utility* supplied with Windows XP creates a .bkf file that is not compatible with Windows Vista. So, let’s say you have been making backups in Windows XP and you upgrade to Vista. You decide to copy the old files and settings over to Vista but – ooops, the backup utility in Windows XP has been replaced by Vista’s Backup and Restore Center – which does not support .bkf backup files created with Windows NTBackup (this is the real name of the Windows XP program called the ‘Backup or Restore Utility’). Perhaps it was too easy to simply allow XP support for restoring backups in Vista, so you will need to download and install this conversion tool. It works for Server 2003 and Windows XP backups (.bkf). Note, however, that this is a one-way tool. It will let you restore XP files onto Vista, but not the other way around.
*Maybe you didn’t even realise Windows XP had its own backup program. It is installed automatically in Windows XP Professional, but Windows Home edition will require a manual installation from the Windows XP CD. To install it, run the Ntbackup.msi file in the folder located at [cd drive]:VALUEADDMSFTNTBACKUP. To see if the Backup or Restore Utility is on your system, click Start-Run and type NTBACKUP, followed by the enter key.

Windows XP with SP2
File Name
WindowsVistaUpgradeAdvisor.msi

Description
Here is the low-down from Microsoft: ‘Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor is designed to help Windows XP users identify whether their PCs are ready for an upgrade to Windows Vista, which edition of Windows Vista meets their needs, and which features of Windows Vista will be able to run on their PCs. Download the Upgrade Advisor to run an analysis of your current PC and use the detailed feedback to ensure that your PC is ready for the edition of Windows Vista that you want’.
We do find it a bit strange that they didn’t release a version for Windows 2000, Me or 98. Surely, people using these systems are most likely to update to Windows Vista.

Requirements
Windows Server 2003 (32-Bit), Windows Vista or Windows XP Service Pack 2
File Name
Windows_Vista_Hardware_Assessment_Setup.exe
File Size
22MB
Description
You are probably wondering how this tool is different to the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor. The key difference is that the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor will determine if an individual PC (currently running Windows XP) can be upgraded to Windows Vista. It is mainly designed for home users or standalone PCs. The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment tool is much more detailed and designed to assess networks and servers.
Here is what Microsoft have to say: ‘The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment is a tool that will find computers on a network and perform a detailed inventory of the computers using Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). Through use of the detailed inventory data, the tool will assess and report whether the computers can run Windows Vista, where to find drivers for devices on the computers, and provide recommendations for hardware upgrades, where appropriate. The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment tool does not require the deployment of agent software on the computers being inventoried and assessed. It provides a secure, quick, and easy way to determine which computers, in a networked environment, are Windows Vista ready.’
Note that you also need to have: ‘Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition for storing inventory and assessment data. Microsoft Word 2003 SP2 or Microsoft Word 2007 and Microsoft Excel 2003 SP2 or Microsoft Excel 2007 for generating reports’
