The internet cartoon featured characters from the Simpsons TV series.

The central issue in the case was whether a cartoon character could depict a real person.

Judge Michael Adams decided that it could, and found a man from Sydney guilty of possessing child pornography on his computer.

The defence had argued that the fictional, animated characters were not real people, and clearly departed from the human form.


They therefore contested that the conviction for the possession of child pornography should be overturned.

Justice Michael Adams said the purpose of anti-child pornography legislation was to stop sexual exploitation and child abuse where images of “real” children were depicted.

But in a landmark ruling he decided that the mere fact that they were not realistic representations of human beings did not mean that they could not be considered people.

He ruled that the animated cartoon could “fuel demand for material that does involve the abuse of children,” and therefore upheld the conviction for child pornography.

Rather than jail the man, however, he fined him Aus$3,000 (US$2,000).

If your computer gets infected with a Trojan called the “MonaRonaDona virus,” be careful with what you use to wipe it off your computer, says antimalware software provider Kaspersky. MonaRonaDona is part of an elaborate scam to sell fake antivirus software, Kaspersky researchers say.

Unlike most viruses and Trojans which try to go about their evil task as invisibly as possible, the MonaDonaRona Trojan displays a broadly visibly message in front of the victim. It says, “Welcome to MonaRonaDona. I am a Virus & I am here to wreck your PC. If you observe strange behavior with your PC, like program Windows disappearing, etc., it’s me who’s doing this.” The message claims it’s all part of a human rights protest.

But according to Kaspersky researcher Roel Schouwenberg, MonaRonaDona is mainly a way to panic victims, who then may start a Web search to find out more about it, only to find fake online stories and bogus commentary that instruct victims to use fake antivirus tools — the prominent one being called Unigray, available from the Unigray.com Web site, for about US$39.00.

“There was a link at Digg and at YouTube promoting it,” says Schouwenberg, who writes about it in a Kaspersky blog posting.

While fake antivirus software scams have cropped up in the past, the MonaRonaDona scam may be unprecedented in terms of its reliance on social engineering in the online world to get victims to download software that removes the MonaRonaDona message but may still be in itself dangerous.

As to how the MonaRonaDona Trojan manages to propagate, Kaspersky Lab sees a link with another piece of “fake” software called RegistryCleaner 2008.

“We’re still researching this but it may be connected with this,” says Schouwenberg, who calls the MonaRonaDona Trojan of the past week to be among the most elaborately orchestrated scams he’s seen.

The bottom line is to clean computers with software from valid antimalware vendors that can detect the bad code, he adds.

Dan Mosedale, a former Firefox developer who joined Mozilla Messaging — dubbed “MoMess” by some — floated the idea of producing an alpha build as early as April in a thread on the mozilla.dev.apps.thunderbird group last week.

“I’d like to get the ball rolling on Thunderbird 3.0 Alpha 1,” said Mosedale, who in January committed to a four-month stint with Mozilla Messaging. “I propose… we arbitrarily set a tentative code-freeze date for Thunderbird 3.0a1 of Tuesday, April 8.

“I believe that it’s really worthwhile to get a release underway. Testers have only had nightlies for quite a while now, and the trunk is already notably better than [Thunderbird 2.0] in a number of ways,” Mosedale continued. “Getting something that we’re willing to recommend to a wider group of people is a great way to demonstrate real progress.”

Two weeks ago, Mozilla Messaging CEO David Ascher announced that the new company — the second for-profit spin-off of the Foundation — would tackle Thunderbird 3.0 as its first project. Ascher said that the mail client would add calendaring and improved search as it worked toward releasing a polished version before the end of the year.

Reaction to Mosedale’s call for an alpha was mostly positive.

“I’m with you,” said Phil Ringnalda. “If we’re going to ship something, ever, we have to start doing alphas, and giving people the feeling that they don’t have forever to write the code of their dreams.”

Gervase Markham, a Mozilla developer, agreed. “[An alpha] also gives a solid target for extension authors,” he noted. “I am reluctant to test trunk Thunderbird because there are a couple of extensions I rely on whose authors have said ‘I can’t support trunk; it moves too much’. Doing a ‘relatively stable’ alpha release allows them a fixed target, enabling long-term testing by people who don’t want to track trunk that closely.”

Mozilla Messaging grew out of a call last year by Mozilla Corp.’s then-CEO Mitchell Baker to break out Thunderbird development from the work on Firefox, the subsidiary’s big breadwinner. In July 2007, Baker said her company’s first priority was the browser, and that Thunderbird should be cut loose “to determine its own destiny.”

By September, Mozilla had seeded the new venture with US$3 million in start-up funds and tapped Ascher to lead the venture.

For years, open source software advocates have been holding “installfests,” gatherings to help others learn how to install and use Linux and other open source applications on computers. This weekend in the US, a nonprofit group and a open source vendor are taking the idea a step further by co-sponsoring an all-day “Installfest for Schools” to create what they hope will be 500 refurbished computers to be used by underprivileged students in schools in nearby neighborhoods.

The computers, which are older, outdated PCs donated by consumers and businesses, will be brought to four locations where tech volunteers will gather to install Ubuntu Linux 7.10, which also includes a host of other open source applications, onto the machines. Computer labs in about nine elementary and high schools are scheduled to receive the Linux-loaded PCs for use by their students, said Andrew Fife, the product marketing manager for Untangle, which sells enterprise open source software that blocks spam, spyware, viruses and other unwanted content.

“This is a very interesting experiment to see how non-tech users who don’t have a lot of computing experience can adapt to Ubuntu,” Fife said.

James Burgett, the founder and executive director of the nonprofit Alameda County Computer Resource Center (ACCRC), said the key to the Installfest is that the old computer equipment will be given new lives and used by students and schools that need them.

An additional benefit is that by recycling the hardware, it won’t have to be disposed of in municipal landfills or trash incinerators. “My primary purpose is reuse,” Burgett said. “I’m much more concerned with avoiding such lost opportunities.”

The ACCRC refurbishes usable old PCs and donates them to charities, nonprofit groups, schools and to low-income or disabled people. Non-working computer gear is sent away for recycling. Fife said he hopes to have as many as 40 volunteers working at each of the four sites, installing and testing Ubuntu on the machines to be sure they are working properly.

Setting up the one-day event has been complicated, he said. “There are a lot of logistical challenges,” Fife said. Moving hundreds of PCs from various facilities to the four locations has been a huge challenge.”

To do that, the PCs are shrink-wrapped in plastic, then loaded onto four-foot-square shipping pallets and trucked to the locations.

Fife set up an online Wiki for the event, and volunteers have signed up after hearing about it through a wide range of open source community groups and private companies. The event has been discussed on company blogs, including those from Sun Microsystems, Ubuntu, the Mozilla Foundation and others. The Mozilla Foundation is providing pizza to the volunteers in the four Installfest locations, while NoStarch Press is donating PDF copies of the book, Ubuntu for Non-Geeks, that will be installed on each of the PCs being built for the schools.

Six botnets were responsible for 85 per cent of all spam in February, the first time so few botnets have been responsible for so much spam, according to security provider Marshal’s Threat Research and Content Engineering team (TRACE).

One botnet alone, dubbed Srizbi, was responsible for the largest amount of spam at 39 per cent. It was followed by the Rustock botnet (20 per cent) and the Mega-D botnet (11 per cent) which returned with a vengeance after the discovery of its control servers saw its spam levels drop to zero during mid-February.

The 35,000 strong Mega-D botnet had returned to represent 21 per cent of spam after a 10-day period of inactivity, said Bradley Anstis, vice president of products for Marshal.

“Owing to the break, Mega-D only accounted for an average of 11 per cent of spam during February. At its peak last month, it was responsible for a third of all the spam we caught in our spam traps. While the recent publicity spooked the Mega-D spammers into taking their control servers offline, they have now clearly re-established themselves elsewhere,” Anstiss said.

According to TRACE, the Mega-D botnet is known for concentrating on male body part enhancement pills called “Megadik” or “VPXL” under brand names like “Express Herbals” and “Herbal King”.

Anstis said the Srizbi botnet is using advanced and extremely stealthy malware, garnering most of its success by using celebrity content to lure victims in.

But Srizbi and other sizeable botnets such as Rustock, Hacktool.Spammer and Pushdo are also pushing links to Web sites featuring “Express Herbals”.

“It appears the spammers behind this campaign have access to more than one botnet to distribute their messages. It’s also a possibility that one group controls more than one of these botnets,” Anstiss said.

“By highlighting these spam botnets, we hope the security industry can collectively target these major spamming sources and in doing so significantly reduce spam volumes.”

The Storm botnet, which attracted significant levels of publicity in recent months and was touted as the world’s largest botnet, accounted for only 2 per cent of spam for the month of February.
