DirectX 9.0c (Full Package)

DirectX 9.0c will help improve multimedia experiences on most PCs. This latest version of DirectX offers improved security, updated graphics, faster frame rates, and support for massively multiplayer games. It also features more immersive audio when running and displaying programs rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3-D animation and surround sound. If you had an earlier version of DirectX installed on your system, you will see little difference in available space on your hard drive following the installation. DirectX 9.0c will overwrite any earlier versions. This release also resolves a number of minor bugs and included security updates.

Important notes: This is the ‘redist’ version - all files are downloaded in one package (rather than an active download). DirectX is a crucial system component. It cannot be uninstalled without reinstalling your operating system (!). Released April 2007.

For April 2007, Microsoft released this patch a week early because it was deemed critical. It fixes many issues affecting the Windows GDI (Graphics Device Interface) whose main function is to handle the display of graphics on monitors and printers. This includes drawing lines, curves, fonts, colors and so on. This is a critical system component and leaving it unpatched will make it easy for a virus or hacker to attack your system.

One of the vulnerabilities lies in .ani files - which is a significant concern. Theses files are used to animate the cursor icon (such as the hour glass when Windows is busy). There are reports that the hole was already being exploited by hackers before the patch came out. The main culprits installed on unpatched PCs are key-stroke loggers. These pests record the strokes on your keyboard - such as bank account details or passwords and send them to hackers.

Unfortunately, the version that shipped with Windows Vista (labelled as version 6, but in reality should be called version 3), has a few problems that stop some users from running the software. Here is what Microsoft have to say:’Movie Maker 2.6 is for Windows Vista users whose computer cannot run the Vista version of Movie Maker. If you get an error message that says, ‘Windows Movie Maker cannot start because your video card does not support the required level of hardware acceleration or hardware acceleration is not available’, download and install Movie Maker 2.6. Movie Maker 2.6 requires a version of Microsoft Windows Vista that has the Vista version of Movie Maker already installed.’

Microsoft do not release Movie Maker as a standalone installation, so even though the Vista edition (version 6) may not work on your system, you must have it on your system before downloading this file. This installation will then downgrade Movie Maker from version 6 to 2.6. Not surprisingly, some usrs are quite annoyed that they have bought and installed an upgraded version of Windows, only to find they need to downgrade a component because it doesn’t work properly. If you use Windows XP, version 2.1 of Movie Maker is included in Service Pack 2.

This one is so ironic, it took the combined genius of both Apple and Microsoft to come up with it. Ejecting an iPod from Windows Explorer or the Windows notification area (system tray) using the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ feature may corrupt your iPod. In other words, the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ is supposed to be the safest and most reliable way to disconnect hardware, yet in this case it can corrupt the contents of your iPod - the exact thing it designed to avoid doing. This patch fixes the problem so you can now use the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ feature in Vista. It was a surprise that this patch came from Microsoft and not Apple.

This suggests the problem lies in the Vista Operating System and not within iTunes or the iPods. Perhaps Microsoft didn’t trust Apple to fix the problem.

If your iPod did become corrupt because of this error, selecting your iPod in iTunes and clicking Restore in the iPod’s Summary panel should return your iPod to a working condition.

A long time ago, Microsoft commonly used the .hlp extension (eg win16.hlp) as a way of identifying and loading help files in Windows. This was not just for Windows help files - but all sorts of software and drivers used .hlp files. Over the years, it was slowly phased out and in Vista you can’t even open .hlp files. That’s why you need this program. WinHlp32.exe will allow you to view .hlp files on Windows Vista (32 bit). The thing about help files is that you don’t normally care about them until you really need them. So get the program now to ensure that you can view any important help file when the time arises.

A quick search on a test machine loaded with software showed that over fifty .hlp files were on the system. This number will vary, and is likely to be smaller on some installation of Windows Vista due to the poor compatibility of Windows Vista and older software. However this is a small download and worth the time.

Apart from releasing WinHlp32.exe months after Vista, Microsoft has almost disowned this type of file. Here is what they have to say ‘The Windows Help program has not had a major update for many releases and no longer meets Microsoft’s standards. Therefore, starting with the release of Windows Vista, the Windows Help program will not ship as a feature of Windows.

This free program from Microsoft lets you restore a backup made on Windows XP onto Windows Vista. The first question you are probably asking is why do you need this program. Well, it seems the Backup or Restore Utility* supplied with Windows XP creates a .bkf file that is not compatible with Windows Vista. So, let’s say you have been making backups in Windows XP and you upgrade to Vista. You decide to copy the old files and settings over to Vista but - ooops, the backup utility in Windows XP has been replaced by Vista’s Backup and Restore Center - which does not support .bkf backup files created with Windows NTBackup (this is the real name of the Windows XP program called the ‘Backup or Restore Utility’). Perhaps it was too easy to simply allow XP support for restoring backups in Vista, so you will need to download and install this conversion tool. It works for Server 2003 and Windows XP backups (.bkf). Note, however, that this is a one-way tool. It will let you restore XP files onto Vista, but not the other way around.

*Maybe you didn’t even realise Windows XP had its own backup program. It is installed automatically in Windows XP Professional, but Windows Home edition will require a manual installation from the Windows XP CD. To install it, run the Ntbackup.msi file in the folder located at [cd drive]:VALUEADDMSFTNTBACKUP. To see if the Backup or Restore Utility is on your system, click Start-Run and type NTBACKUP, followed by the enter key.
